Neck pain is a common condition characterized by discomfort, soreness, or stiffness in the cervical spine—the seven vertebrae that make up the neck region. It can occur due to various factors, including muscle strain, injury, degenerative changes in the spine, or underlying medical conditions.
Symptoms of neck pain can vary widely and may include dull aches, sharp or stabbing pain, tension, headaches, limited range of motion, muscle spasms, or pain that radiates to the shoulders, arms, or upper back.
Common causes of neck pain include muscle strain or tension from prolonged sitting, or overuse of electronic devices; cervical disc herniation, which involves the bulging or herniation of intervertebral discs in the neck; cervical spondylosis (degenerative disc disease), which involves the wear and tear of spinal discs and joints in the neck; and cervical spinal stenosis, which involves the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
